Filippo Valente studied art in Baltimore, architecture in Milan, and philosophy in Bologna, where he took a BA in 2000, specializing in the philosophy of law. He has since worked as an academic and legal translator and copy-editor at CIRSFID, an interdisciplinary research centre based at the Bologna University School of Law, where he helps lawyers, scholars, and researchers put their ideas across clearly in their writing.

He is presently translating and copy-editing Volume 12 of A Treatise of Legal Philosophy and General Jurisprudence (due out with Springer), and as of 2014 he is teaching a mini-course on the basic principles of clear writing: the course is addressed to the Ph.D. students enrolled in the Erasmus Mundus Joint International Doctoral Program in Law, Science, and Technology in Bologna and is designed to help them write effective papers.
